"A Beautiful Mind" and "Moulin Rouge" - two films heavy on romance - were the big winners at the 2002 Golden Globes held on Sunday, January 20th in front of a star-packed audience.
Director Ron Howard's compelling look at the life of John Forbes Nash Jr., "A Beautiful Mind," was the biggest winner, taking home four Golden Globes, including Best Drama, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay. Baz Luhrmann's incredibly entertaining "Moulin Rouge" claimed three Golden Globe awards, including Best Musical or Comedy, Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and, not surprisingly, Best Original Score.
The Golden Globes are a good barometer as to the direction the Academy Awards will take. "A Beautiful Mind" and "Moulin Rouge" should see a boost in their chances to capture a few coveted Oscars due to their Globes wins. With "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" shut-out at the Globes, yet a winner at the AFI Awards, which picture will ultimately capture the Best Picture Oscar at this year's Academy Awards is still anyone's guess.
