Inside the City of Ember

Tuesday October 7, 2008
City of Ember stars Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) and Harry Treadaway (Brothers of the Head) as teenagers who have to try and save their city once the power generator starts to fail and the lights start to flicker. Getting the 'City of Ember' set perfect was as important as landing the right cast for director Gil Kenan, who believes the city is a lead character in the film.

On the set of City of Ember last October, Treadaway talked about how the realism of the set helped him get into character. "...On this more than anything, I think, the kind of visual manifestation of the script has been stronger than anything else I’ve ever done. Like the whole world. It’s like being in Ember. The first scene was turning up this contraption that dad had made that we kind of find. You turn up and it’s there and it really is there, and kind of as you imagined it or better - normally more detailed. I think Martin Laing deserves a mention for the set that he’s done, which I’m just constantly amazed by. Every room you turn up into, you’re just blown away and you go, ‘Nice one, mate.’ It kind of makes your job easier because it’s there. And you see the controller and little buttons are flashing. It’s all there." Read More...

  • Crowe, DiCaprio and Scott Talk Body of Lies

    Monday October 6, 2008
Russell Crowe was in rare form at the Los Angeles press conference for Warner Bros Pictures' Body of Lies starring Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio, and directed by Ridley Scott. Crowe sat down and was ready to face the media before DiCaprio came into the room, and he couldn't resist the temptation to point out the fact he'd beaten DiCaprio to the table and was ready to take questions before his co-star. Crowe even jokingly asked a reporter if he wanted to fill in for DiCaprio. Right off the bat Crowe showed he was ready to provide comic relief at the press event, and he never let go of that role throughout the press conference. Read More...

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist Movie Review

    Monday October 6, 2008
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist isn't infinitely entertaining, but it is definitely a cut above the average romantic comedy meant for the teen/college-age audience. It's smart, funny, and sweet. Screenwriter Lorene Scafaria adapted the script from the book by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, and the writing feels completely in step with the world of iPod-addicted, text message-loving young adults. What's more, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist never plays down to its target audience as teen-oriented romantic comedies are prone to do. Read More...

But Rachel messes up and the high-class pooch soon finds herself lost in Mexico. Rising Latin-American actor Cardona co-stars as Viv's gardener, Sam, the guy Rachel turns to for help in retrieving the missing Chihuahua. Read More...

Box Office Report - October 3-5
Dogs dominated this weekend's box office take, as the kid-friendly Disney film Beverly Hills Chihuahua didn't have to beg for business. Beverly Hills Chihuahua did as expected, coming in first with $29 million (that could buy a lot of doggie treats). Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist also found some box office love, but another new release - Flash of Genius - proved to be a difficult sell. The prospect of sitting through a movie about the guy who invented intermittent windshield wipers must have sounded as appealing as watching a movie about paint drying as moviegoers pretty much shunned the film. Flash of Genius didn't even make the Top 10 despite good reviews and positive word of mouth.
