Nicole Kidman and Ralph Fiennes Star in The Reader

Aug 10, 2007 - The Weinstein Company has finalized deals with Nicole Kidman* and Ralph Fiennes to star in the romantic drama, The Reader, based on Bernhard Schlink's novel. David Hare adapted the novel for the big screen with Stephen Daldry attached to direct. Hare and Daldry last worked together on The Hours which starred Nicole Kidman in her Oscar-winning role as Virginia Woolf.

Anthony Minghella, Sydney Pollack and Scott Rudin are producing the film which is set in Germany. Schlink's book tells the story of Michael Berg, a 15-year-old high school student who's taken care of by a much older woman after falling ill. After he recovers the two become lovers, but Hanna has a dark secret...

Filming is expected to start in September.

Nicole Kidman will next be seen in The Golden Compass, the first film of the His Dark Materials series. Ralph Fiennes has been scaring Muggle audiences as Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter movie franchise.
